Blog Assignment 5- Course Development
Weekly Summary
Over a couple weeks, we have been creating a course development assignment through CourseSites. I am realizing the best way to complete this is to experiment with all the different tools, links, and aspects of the site in order to create a great design. I feel like a great design and easy accessible class is the best way to keep students on track and not frustrated. Most students, myself included, get uneasy or upset when they can't figure out where or how to get to something on Blackboard. I'm going to do my best in creating this course development assignment so that it is easy to access and students aren't having to look everywhere to find things.
Item of Interest
Since my class has several art projects, I wanted to create a place for the students to submit them so others in the class could see them and not just be sent to me. It was hard for me to decide how to accomplish this task without students criticizing each other and making them seem like the course was too overwhelming. I also have them complete a blog posting and respond to two peers. I decided to have them share their artwork on the discussion board and if they reply to two peers they can get one extra point toward their final grade. This gives them the opportunity to gain extra points, if they want to, and collaborate with other students in the class.
Problem or Concern
My concern with this is that some students will not complete this and then at the end of the semester want extra points or to complete late, when they see their final grade. After having this option in one of my classes this semester, I will stress the importance of completing these easy extra point posts just in case they need them in the end and making sure they are aware of the due dates. I believe this is an easy way to earn points and be able to interact with students in your class.

Blog Assignment 4-Engagement
Weekly Summary
This week we are deciding on the best engagement activities that students can get the most out of. I think learner engagement is a very critical aspect in courses that are designed for distant learning. I find that if I can get engaged in the assignment, I learn a lot more and am able to retain the information much longer. I also feel like engagement means interacting with other students in the class, along with the instructor. Most students I have worked with are more engaged if they are completing hand-on activities that allow them to see first hand how and what is going on.
Item of Interest
Since my class consists of art, several of my projects and assignments are hands-on, which allows students to get experience through doing it. My item of interest is the radial and tessellation art modules in my course. For these two activities, students are required to watch a video that describes how to do it and what is needed to complete it. And then they are to make their own artwork and submit it for a grade. They are also required to relate these two types of art to mathematics, since they go hand in hand. I have used this activity with my art classes and also in a math class, when I was subbing.
Problem or Concern
The only concern I have is that students may not understand the concept of the artwork in the video or some may think it is very easy. I feel like sometimes students just complete the project without understanding how it fits into the lesson. Another problem I see a lot is that some students have no interest in art, which makes it hard to teach them and give them an interest in it. I feel like the only way to help with that is to make it fun for them and try to relate it to something that interests them.

Blog Assignment 3- Community and Collaboration
Weekly Summary
Throughout this week, we have been researching on some collaboration ideas to incorporate into our lesson. Since last week, I have weighed my options on how to make the collaboration in my art class valuable. Community and Collaboration are both very important aspects in art because it teaches students to work together, have various ideas that come together, and learn about art pieces in the community.
Item of Interest
I have a couple items of interest for my art class. First, is about community involvement. I am requiring my students to go to an art museum of their choice and research some of the art pieces throughout the museum. This gives them an idea of various art pieces from different artists. Second, is the group collaboration presentation at the end of the semester. During this assignment, students will be grouped with 2 other students and required to research an artist and put together a power point about their research. One will be required to give some background and information about the artist, one will be required to research some of the artwork this artist has made and the meaning behind it, and one will be required to come up with an activity that would go with this artist. Or they may all work together on all three parts as long as they give a summary of which student completed what parts and it was equal participation.
Problem or Concern
The problem or concern I have with the requirement to go to an art museum is that the students have the time and money to go. I feel like this could be resolved by allowing them to present a link for a virtual tour of an art museum and still complete the same requirements as going to the museum. The problem or concern I have with the group collaboration presentation is that not all students will equally participate. I was in a group once, and one of the girls didn't want to complete her portion until the day before it was due and the rest of us had ours finished two weeks ahead of time but couldn't put everything together until hers was done. It made it very hard and frustrating to work with someone like that. I think maybe have some checkpoints throughout this to make sure everyone is working at the same pace.

Blog Assignment 2- Assessment
Weekly Summary
This week we began working on the assessments, which help us better understand whether or not a student is understanding what is being taught in the classroom. As teachers, we must make sure our assessments match our objectives and that learners know what we expect of them through demonstration of their mastery of the knowledge or skill. Assessments I used in my course include objective and formative.
Item of Interest
In this course, I will be using formative assessment as feedback on how well my students have comprehended the course. This will include scanning in their art work and submitting it into the correct place. I will also have some multiple choice, true/false, and matching assessments that will be open book/video. This will help them better relate the material through text and videos with their actual art projects. I also think this allows me to see if the students are, in fact, reading the required material and watching the videos. The objective assessments will require them to download the document, choose the correct answer, and submit the completed document to the correct link.
Problem or Concern
The main problem or concern I see with these assessments are the students only completing the assessments through book/video and completing the artwork to realize they haven't really learned the material. So many videos and examples are available through YouTube that students can watch and complete without having to put any thought into it. I also like to use open book assessments to verify students have completed the readings but this too can be avoided by just looking up the answers to the questions instead of actually completing all the reading required.

Blog Assignment 1-Analysis
Weekly Summary
This week, we began developing our course outline that will be used throughout this semester. Our main focus this week was on the analysis phase of the project. This phase includes student and content information that the students should complete for this particular course.
Item of Interest
The course that I am creating is considered an elective course so there would be no prerequisites or classes required after this one. When taking an elective course, most students need it for credit hours and sometimes aren't even interested in it. So I decided to make the introduction of each student interesting. I will require my students to complete an introduction video, which will need to include a picture of themselves, major, goals, interests, and why they took this course and what they hope to gain from the class. The video must be at least 3 minutes long and have their voice as the recording. The idea of this is for each student to get to know each other and seeing why they chose this course.
Problem or Concern
The main problem I see with this assignment is that some students may not be advanced enough in technology to complete the introduction video without adequate help. For campus classes, I could show them how and what programs to use to complete the project but with online classes, it becomes a little more difficult. I would however be available for questions and concerns.
